Email defeat

The Washington Post published an article last Friday entitled “E-Mail Reply to All: ‘Leave Me Alone’”. The story picks up on a recent trend to declare “email bankruptcy”. Apparently, some people are so overwhelmed by the amount of unread and unanswered emails in their inbox that the only way out is to start over by deleting all accumulated messages and/or to declare an email moratorium.

No-email Fridays!?

Here is another take on “making email boring”- how corporate America is trying to deal with email overload. Some of you may have seen this story on ABC last Saturday.

U.S. Cellular CEO Jay Ellison is banning email on Fridays. Ironically, Ellison announced the measure in an email to all 5,500 employees:

“Get out to meet your teams face-to-face. Pick up the phone and give someone a call. … I look forward to not hearing from any of you, but stop by as often as you like.”

Making email boring…

Over the years customers are increasingly talking about the negative effects of email on worker productivity. This concern is especially pronounced for service oriented businesses that depend on billable hours, such as consulting, law and accounting firms. That doesn’t mean other businesses are immune to the effects. This week, I’ve heard about yet another large company in the financial services sector that is recognizing this problem and planning to do something about it. The CIO of this company has mandated to “Make Email boring”.
