IBM’s Steve Mills (senior vice president of IBM’s software group) and Lotus VP Bruce Morse hosted a press conference earlier this week. At the event, they shared IBM’s strategy for Unified Communication and Collaboration (UC2).

IM becoming mission-critical

There are a few clear signs that indicate when a new technology is catching on. The most obvious ones are: 1.) The users suddenly cannot seem to live without it, and 2.) The technology is being used far beyond its originally intended purpose. Email has passed that test many years ago and is still going strong.

Notes/Domino 8 is hitting the homestretch

IBM Lotus has published the 3rd and final Beta of the much anticipated Notes /Domino version 8 yesterday (see also Notes gets Nip/Tuck’ed). Although no official release date has been announced so far, the final product will most likely ship in Q3 of this year.

Lotus Sametime plays nicely with MS-Office

IBM Lotus released Sametime 7.5.1 last week. I’m not sure how I missed this in the prior release, but I just noticed that Sametime now supports integration with the Microsoft Office suite.

This feature was first mentioned last summer with the pre-announcement of Sametime 7.5 amongst a slew of many other important enhancements to the product, including the gateway to public IM networks.
